The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics has released a new document, Curriculum Focal Points for Prekindergarten through Grade 8 Mathematics. This new document, designed to accompany the 2000 NCTM publication, Principals and Standards for School Mathematics, creates an outline of math curriculum across grade levels, by designating three areas of focus for each grade level.
Instead of creating topical headings for lists of skills, like many state mathematics standards, Curriculum Focal Points creates an overarching design for curriculum that integrates the standards, building on background knowledge and creating a solid foundation for high school mathematics. Not a back-to-basics skills list, Curriculum Focal Points encourages combining strands and standards into areas of focus to encourage problem solving, reasoning, and communicating.
