Grant Title: Striving Readers Program

The U.S. Department of Education has put forth a new grant program entitled Striving Readers.This funding is designed to support research-based reading intervention for middle and high school students in Title I schools. The Striving Readers program aims to improve the quality of literacy instruction as well as literacy skills of struggling readers. Advanced Micro Devices' grants fund schools and districts K-12, and award amounts vary. AMD supports classroom instruction by promoting interest and proficiency in literacy, math, and computer technology. As an organization, AMD believes that having superior teachers leads to enhanced learning. Let's Go Learn espouses the same philosophy, as demonstrated by a comprehensive staff development plan to support its online literacy assessment and instructional programs. The Citigroup Foundation focuses on strengthening education in low-income communities. Its grants emphasize the importance of all children having access to quality education in order to prepare themselves for the workforces and for becoming active members of society. Areas supported include literacy development, computer training, and teacher training that is designed to increase student achievement.

Grant Title: Coca-Cola Foundation Grants
Deadline: Ongoing

The Coca-Cola Foundation supports high-quality education and seeks to find new solutions to today's educational problems. One overarching goal is to empower people to better their lives. Grants are awarded to innovative public school programs and teacher development programs. There are also monies available for smaller, more specific projects in elementary or secondary classrooms.

The National Education Association's Foundation for the Improvement of Education (NFIE) offers small grants on a year-round basis. One grant-type emphasizes high quality professional development for public school teachers and educational support professionals. The professional development must improve practice, curriculum, and student achievement. It also must be tied to student assessment and integrated with instructional planning. Let's Go Learn offers differentiated student assessment that is linked directly to instructional strategies, as well as comprehensive professional development. The State Farm Companies Foundation awards grants to K-12 public schools in the United States and Canada that emphasize improving teacher quality and educational performance practices. Proposals are accepted year-round. Upon submission, please note that Let's Go Learn's individualized student assessment and instruction are differentiated to meet the needs of each student. Grant Title: Ready to Learn

The Prudential Foundation's Ready to Learn grant program provides support for literacy strategies that address professional development for teachers or literacy in the early years.

When considering this grant, be sure to note that Let's Go Learn provides K-12 web-based literacy assessment and K-5 instruction that is differentiated to meet the needs of each learner. Additionally, professional development is offered to support the teacher in the implementation and integration of Let's Go Learn's products.

The Prudential Foundation serves the Newark and surrounding New Jersey urban centers. It also funds programs in cities where Prudential has a significant presence. These cities include Atlanta, Chicago, Hartford, Houston, Jacksonville, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Philadelphia and Phoenix. The Foundation receives and reviews proposals throughout the year. Grants that exceed $200,000 must be approved by its board of trustees, which meets three times a year.

The Sprint Foundation supports educational reform through the use of new technologies and the enhancement of teacher skills. It is recommended that applicants identify how their projects support Sprint's objectives: innovation and the use of technology in the classroom; enhanced education for minorities and/or the disadvantaged; and increased employee and public support of education.

When considering this grant, please note that Let's Go Learn's web-based assessment and instruction comprise a fresh approach to learning through the use of technology. Additionally, these products are differentiated to meet the needs of all students.

Grants are primarily available in areas with significant employee presence, such as Kansas City, Atlanta, Dallas, and Sacramento, although schools and other education-related nonprofit agencies may apply. The Sprint Foundation reviews unsolicited proposals on a continuous basis. Applicants will typically receive a response within four to six weeks.

Texas Instruments Foundation grants typically range from $5000 to$10,000, and there is no special application form required. Applicants must submit a one- or two-page proposal that briefly outlines the following: purpose of the organization, population served, amount requested, how the requested funds will be used, how the proposal matches funding interests of the foundation, and a copy of 501(c)(3) designation. The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation offers grants that support quality educational opportunities, student achievement, and improved access to exemplary educational content. Applicants should submit a brief letter of intent for initial review. It is important to note that Let's Go Learn offers both web-based assessment and instruction designed to meet the needs of all learners. Organization: The Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy
Deadline: Ongoing

This national grant is designed to support literacy programs that emphasize reading as a family. Family Literacy programs funded through the Foundation's National Grant Program must include reading instruction for parents or primary caregivers, (pre-GED/GED/ESL etc.), literacy or pre-literacy instruction for children, and intergenerational activities in which the parents/primary caregivers and children come together to learn and to read. Individual grants do not exceed $65,000.

Let's Go Learn can be a valuable part of a growing family literacy program. The K-12 online assessment is designed to deliver an exact picture of the reader's abilities in six sub-tests. It can be used with both children and adults. Following the assessment, web-based instructional activities are differentiated to meet the needs of each learner.

Organization: Verizon Foundation
Deadline: Ongoing

Verizon Foundation awards grants that support both basic literacy and computer literacy. Both arenas are addressed by Let's Go Learn's web-based assessment and instruction. Learners are taken through a series of six diagnostic sub-tests, which then direct them into individualized reading lessons. The instructor is provided with a comprehensive report that paints a complete picture of the learner's reading profile.

Applications for these grants are accepted January through November. School grant requests must benefit after-school programs and have a current National Center for Education Statistics school and district registration number to qualify.

Organization: The Toshiba America Foundation
Grant Title: Toshiba's Grade K-6 Science and Math Grant Program
Deadline: October 1

The Toshiba America Foundation will award grants up to $1,000 each for math and science-related projects. Kindergarten through sixth grade teachers are eligible, however there are also grants available for grades 7-12. Please see the website for more information regarding middle and high school grants. Each teacher may apply only once, and the application deadline is October 1. Funds are typically awarded to projects that emphasize hands-on experiential learning. Let's Go Learn's Diagnostic Online Math Assessment is a vital part of any such math program. The International Reading Association, an organization dedicated to promoting literacy and improving the quality of reading instruction, provides a myriad of grants for literacy, children's literature, research, and professional development projects. Visit this site and search under "grants" for a complete listing of available funding opportunities, grant guidelines, and application forms. Grant funds may be used in a variety of ways - for example, to purchase reading assessments and curriculum or to support professional development.

Organization: International Reading Association
Grant Title: Presidential Award for Reading and Technology
Deadline: November 15

The Presidential Award for Reading and Technology is given to educators who are making outstanding contributions to the use of technology in reading education. Entrants must detail how they have used technology to improve the literacy skills of students in their school, including an overview of the program and its goals. They must also include information about the student population, types of technology used, and learning activities and their outcomes. The description should be no more than three pages long. No videos, CD-ROMS, other media, photographs, or other materials of any kind may be submitted. The grand-prize award is $1,000, plus up to $2,000 in expenses to attend the IRA convention. Nine additional winners will each receive a prize of $500. All entrants must be educators who work directly with students ages 5-18 for all or part of the working day. Completed entries must be received by November 15.

When considering this grant, please note that Let's Go Learn's Diagnostic Online Reading Assessment is a web-based tool that gives an accurate picture of an individual's reading profile. The six sub-tests can be used to determine the learner's relative strengths and areas of challenge and tailor instruction accordingly. Let's Go Learn's Unique Reader package will take students to the next level by differentiating and delivering reading lessons for each learner. Grant Title: AT&T Foundation Grants
Deadline: Ongoing

The AT&T Foundation believes that educated citizens improve the quality of life for all. Its awards include those that better the quality of teaching and professional development, especially related to the application of technology. AT&T funds are typically distributed through invitational programs or through projects that the foundation proactively develops with nonprofit organizations. Grant Title: Dollar General's Back-to-School Grants

The Dollar General grant program believes that the advancement of literacy and basic educational skills is the backbone of our educational system. Their Back-to-School grant program will award $5,000 in grants to assist schools in meeting some of the financial challenges they face in implementing new programs or purchasing new equipment, materials, or software for their school libraries or literacy programs. Let's Go Learn offers a web-based literacy assessment and instructional tool that can supplement the teacher's current classroom curriculum. Grant Title: EcoPhones Fundraiser
Deadline: Ongoing

The EcoPhones Drive is a cellular phone fund-raising and recycling program that pays organizations up to $200 for each used digital cell phone they turn in. No buying or selling is required to participate, just recycling. EcoPhones provides a free marketing kit to help launch community phone drives. Once you have collected a full box of cell phones, EcoPhones will pick them up for free. Within 30 days you'll receive a check. These funds can in turn be used to purchase Let's Go Learn's online assessment and instructional products.

Grant Title: Mary A. Crocker Trust Grants

The Mary A. Crocker Trust funds programs pay special attention to alternative approaches to education in the greater Bay Area. Projects involving the use of technology will be considered. In the initial letter of inquiry, be sure to include a description of the educational plan and the intended outcome with a focus on the innovative features. It would be helpful to state that Let's Go Learn offers a web-based program that includes diagnostic student assessment that is linked directly to individualized, differentiated instructional strategies, as well as comprehensive professional development. The average grant size ranges from $10,000 to $25,000.

Organization: The Edward E. Ford Foundation
Grant Title: Edward E. Ford Foundation Grants
Deadline: September 15

The Edward E. Ford Foundation awards grants annually to independent high schools that are active members of the National Association of Independent Schools. Most grants are worth $50,000 or less, and every grant is expected to have a matching component (at least one-to-one) with the extent of the match being an appropriate challenge for the particular school. The foundation has agreed to consider some grants as large as $100,000 in order to be able to participate more substantially in projects that are particularly imaginative and likely to be of broad benefit to independent schools.

When addressing the foundation, it will be important to detail Let's Go Learn's strengths in the secondary classroom. LGL's Diagnostic Online Reading Assessment (DORA) enables the teacher to assess multiple students simultaneously, thus achieving the same results as a reading specialist in a fraction of the time. Additionally, a professional development component has been designed to support teachers in their efforts to integrate the products with their existing curriculum.

The foundation's board meets three times a year to consider proposals: November, April, and June. Deadlines for submitting proposals are Sept.15, Feb. 1, and April 1, respectively. The head of school should meet with the foundation's executive director at his office before the proposal is consider by the board. Applicants are encouraged to contact the office directly by phone to get a full understanding of the application guidelines and request a place on the board meeting's agenda.
